charcoal drawing on flat washes of watercolor
Wishing to design a colorful graphic for an upcoming show I hit 4 local libraries and the internet looking for acceptable ways to add color to drawings....and have them still look like drawings. I looked into illustration methods and found that some famous early illustrators (e.g. Jessie Wilcox Smith) drew with charcoal and then layered watercolor on top of that. I thought that if I kept the washes very flat that the final effect would be colorful and be clearly a drawing. I'm pleased with the result but I don't know yet if this will be acceptable to the gallery. So I'll keep experimenting.
